My name is SaraMi Liljeholm. I grew up in Sweden in Nordingrå, the "High Coast" area which is known for its beautiful nature. This is an area with many artists. Growing up in this environment might be what has inspired me to create beautiful things myself.

To become a goldsmith I did my four year long education at Sweden's oldest goldsmith school, in Mjölby. I learned the craftsmanship profoundly. This is a great base. To master the techniques gives me great possibilities for what I can accomplish when I use my creativity.

After the goldsmith school, I moved to Stockholm. I worked in for Claes E Giertta, a well known designer of contemporary silver work, making one-of-a-kind gold and silver items of his design. Then I worked for Rolf Karlsson Guld & Silversmide AB, where I both designed and practised jewellery making to customer specifications. This is an inspiring way of working. To meet people with a different view opens up new ideas.

In June 2002, I moved from Stockholm to the countryside again. Now I and my fiancé, Roger Bergh who is a knife maker, live 40 km north of Umeå in Dalkarlså. We have turned the old cowshed into a great workshop. We work with two handicrafts that can interact with each other.

I first met Roger in 1995, just before I started my goldsmiths' education. He introduced me to the world of knives and damascus and I was truly fascinated. I thought the damascus was a wonder of beauty and I still think it is. In 1998 we made our first collaboration jewellery using damascus and gold and he also brought me to Conny Persson who taught me how to forge damascus.

The combination of gold and damascus is truly powerful. They complement each other like day and night or like masculine and feminine. This is what makes these wonderful materials even more beautiful as an ensemble.
