Description: Mastersmith Michael Rader is world renowned for his high quality kitchen knives featuring some of the most beautiful handles you will ever see! This exquisite slicer was kept in a private collection since it was made. It is in brand new condition and by all appearances Michael could have made it yesterday!
This knife is well suited for slicing and portioning meats and fish due to the thin, long blade. Extremely sharp, it is also well suited to preparing sushi and sashimi. The extended blade length allows you to slice with one long stroke, instead of sliding the knife back and forth in a sawing motion. The result is a superior, clean cut. It could also easy replace your scimitar as a butcher's knife or salmon fillet knife.
The 12 inch upswept blade is hand forged 52100 carbon steel. An elegant mustard finish provides limited rust resistance. 52100 is considered by many knifemakers and knife users to be among the best steels (if not the best!) used in modern knifemaking. It combines exceptional edge holding with durability and ease of sharpening. The spine and choil are rounded for comfort. Michael's touchmark is on the left side of the blade. His M.S. mark and 52100 is marked on the right side. We recommend using camellia oil to protect the blade and natural wood handle.
Showing his tremendous skill at the forge, the bolster is integral to the blade. Though this technique is regularly done in production knives, forging an integral bolster in a custom setting is extremely difficult and shows the maker's skill at its best. This technique allows the weight of the knife to be more center balanced.
The handle combines curly bradford pear wood (Pyrus calleryana) with a box elder burl cap. A thin dark maple burl spacer provides a touch of contrast between the light toned woods. Alternating copper and black fiber spacers will help the natural woods adjust to humidity and temperature changes. Despite the large length of the blade, this knife feels nimble and easy to control. Like other knives, this knife should not be put in the dishwasher.
Excellent work throughout!
