Description: This exceptional tanto combines Japanese and American techniques to create a knife with tremendous impact. Michael Rader has a style all of his own. His work combines an aesthetic drawn from Medieval and Far East influences. This exceptional knife was made by Michael while he was a Journeyman Smith. It has been in a single collection and has been meticulously cared for. It is in new condition.
Michael forged the blade from three separate carbon steels -- 52100, 15N20, and 8660. The resulting pattern was formed by twisting and re-layering the steels. By forging the blade to shape, Michael has ensured exceptional strength and beauty. A mar quench, cryogenic heat treatment, and triple temper result in optimal edge retention.
The handle is formed from stabilized curly maple with black walnut accents. The walnut is also reflected in the sculpted presentation stand. A damascus plaque on the stand bear's Rader's mark. Michael's superior woodworking is a hallmark of his style. The woods are meticulously combined in complex arches -- with the seams nearly beyond perception. Exceptional work throughout.
