Description: Fred Ott's work is exceptional! He combines Western and European influences to create a truly spectacular knife. Ironwood Hamon Hunter was made by Ott in the spring of 2006. It has been in a private collection since it was made. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. By all appearances, Ott could have made it yesterday.
Showing the influence of Japanese swords on his work, after forging the blade from 1086M carbon steel, Fred clay hardened the blade. This technique results in a soft, supportive spine, with a hard edge -- a perfect combination of sharpness and brawn. The border between hard and soft steel is the repetitive, gently undulating pattern known in Japan as gunome.
The handle is formed from a single piece of Arizona desert ironwood (Olneya tesota). The handle incorporates warm, dark tones. A buffalo horn section is surrounded by red fiber spacers. This assists the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. An brass guard completes the knife.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched pouch style leather sheath.
Excellent fit and finish throughout with a great feel in the hand.
