Description: This exceptional Tanto sets a new level for Fred Ott's work. This Japanese-style tanto grabs the imagination from first sight.
The 1086M carbon steel blade was forged to shape and clay hardened using a traditional Japanese technique. The resulting heat treatment line, known as a hamon, makes a separation between the soft, supportive spine, and the ultra-hard, long lasting edge. The mune, or spine, is brought to a ridge. A copper habaki (blade guard) protects the hand satin finished blade from scratches when stored in the wooden sheath (saya). The habaki has been fileworked and this theme is repeated on the front of the small oval tsuba. The handle has been formed from African blackwood and has been hand carved into terraces. This results in a very comfortable, sure grip. As is traditional, the handle disassembles using a single pin at the center of the handle. Fred has carved this pin from matching ebony. Also following tradition, Fred has set his maker's mark on the left side of the tang. On the right side, he has marked "1086M"). Exceptional fit and finish throughout!
