Description: Journeyman Smith Aaron Wilburn has chosen a blade shape for his most recent hunter that shows the influence of Mastersmiths Bill Burke and Ed Fowler's work.
The heat treatment line on this blade is absolutely beautiful, following the curve of the edge in a graceful and precise manner. A secondary heat treatment line complements the first, creating an ovoid shape between the two lines that mimics the dark pattern of the sambar stag grain. A differential heat treatment brings the edge to critical temperature before oil quenching three times. Many thermal cycles and normalizing steps assure consistent grain structure. The blade was then triple-tempered at 400 degrees for exceptional durability. A cryogenic treatment between tempers enhances the knife's edge holding ability. The blade was forged to shape from 52100 carbon steel. Many makers and collectors feel that this is the best steel available anywhere for use as a knife blade.
The handle features a beautiful piece of sambar stag. Stag of this quality has become increasingly rare. Alternating nickel silver and G10 spacers assist the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. The nickel silver pommel also has a G10 spacer. The handle feels so natural in the hand, you’ll have a hard time putting it down. A serious field knife for the avid hunter or collector.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched pouch style sheath. The 9-10oz leather has been hand tooled in a basket weave pattern.
Excellent fit and finish throughout.
