Description: Aaron Wilburn, who was honored as a ABS Journeyman Smith in June of 2009, creates knives that mean business and this Brute de Forge hunter is a great example of his work. This dramatic, clip point fighter shows the influence of knives by Mastersmiths Ed Fowler and Bill Burke.
After attending a seminar lead by Mastersmith Joe Keesler on rasp knives, Aaron was immediately inspired. This knife was forged in the style of an early American rasp knife. In colonial America, coming by quality steel was quite difficult and reusing good steel was required. When a horse rasp wore out, it was quickly ground or forged into a new knife.
Rather than beginning with a rasp, Aaron forged the blade to shape from his own snowflake pattern mosaic damascus. The blade combines two different steels to create one of the most precise and delicate patterns in his repertoire. By forging the blade to shape, Aaron ensures the pattern is enhanced and not obscured by his "brute de forge" choil. The integral choil is nicely rounded for an extremely comfortable grip. The combination of fine damascus with the rustic finish is dramatic and startlingly beautiful.
The handle features high quality sambar stag scales, set on a full tang with a distal taper. The distal taper ensures the weight of the piece settles solidly into the hand, and the handle feels so natural, you’ll have a hard time putting it down. Red fiber spacers add a bright flash of contrast and help the piece adjust to temperature and humidity changes. The knife is finished with domed nickel silver pins and a nickel silver lined lanyard hole, both hammered to complement the texture of the sambar stag..
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched sheath. The 9-10oz leather has been hand tooled and stitched.
Excellent fit and finish throughout.
