Description: Michael Rader was honored as a Journeyman Smith in 2006 and a Master Smith in June 2010. This exquisite katana was made while Michael was a Journeyman. It has been meticulously cared for and has never been used to cut. By all appearances, it could have been made yesterday. Michael has a style all of his own, combining aesthetics drawn from Medieval and Far East influences with his own vision.
The katana is one of the most tradition-laden sword designs in existence. This one-of-a-kind rendition brings together Michael's background in martial arts with his vision as a bladesmith -- the results are exceptional.
The hand-forged 52100 carbon steel blade features a ricasso in place of a habaki (blade guard) and has a symmetrical swedge which both lightens the blade and adds a slim mune (backbar ridge). 52100 has combines a keen edge with durability. Many makers and users feel that 52100 is among the best, if not the best steel for knifemaking. Both the handle and saya (wooden sheath) are made from matching spalted curly maple expertly dovetailed into walnut, a hallmark of Rader style. An ovoid 300 layer damascus tsuba brings an understated touch of class to the entire piece. Once unsheathed, you immediately notice the light-and-fast, lively feel of this modern katana!
