Description: Fred Ott's work is exceptional -- showing off his tremendous sense of design and skill in implementation.
The blade combines three separate bars of damascus: twist pattern damascus surrounds a central linear bar. The combination of patterns is immediately captivating -- it grabs attention from a distance and holds it upon closer examination. A distal taper creates an optimal balance. The handle combines warm toned black walnut wood with a contrasting Steller's sea cow bone spacer. Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is an extinct, large sirenian mammal formerly found near the Asiatic coast of the Bering Sea. It was discovered in the Commander Islands in 1741 by the German naturalist Georg Steller, who was traveling with the explorer Vitus Bering. Through an unfortunate combination of being slow, large, and good tasting, by 1768, less than 30 years after it had been discovered, Steller's sea cow was extinct. An antiqued, satin finished guard completed the handle. The contoured handle assures a firm, comfortable grip. The knife is accompanied by a wood and leather sheath that nicely matches the knife. An exceptional addition to any collection!
