Description: Aaron Wilburn was honored as a Master Smith in June of 2013. After attending a seminar lead by Mastersmith Joe Keesler on rasp knives, Aaron was immediately inspired. This knife was forged in the style of an early American rasp knife. In colonial America, coming by quality steel was quite difficult and reusing good steel was required. When a horse rasp wore out, it was quickly ground or forged into a new knife.
Here, Aaron began by forging a wolf's tooth pattern damascus from 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels. The blade was then closely forged to shape in the rasp knife style. The integral choil is nicely rounded for an extremely comfortable grip. Along the front, it shows the continued damascus pattern. A soft back draw keeps the spine soft and supportive, with a hard, keen, long lasting edge.
The full tang has been distal tapered for optimal balance. Red fiber spacers assist the jet black ebony grips to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. The ebony is carved to swell at the palm, move into a slimmer waist and swell again at the end of the handle. Hand domed nickel silver pins complete the presentation. A serious field knife for the avid hunter or collector.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched pouch style leather sheath. Aaron uses leather by Wickett & Craig, one of the finest leather producers in America today.
Excellent fit and finish throughout.
