Description: Fred Ott's work is exceptional -- showing off his tremendous sense of design and skill in implementation.
The Damascus blade was hand forged from 1080 and 15N20 carbon steels for a long lasting edge. A distal taper creates an optimal balance. The pattern was created by forging two bars of damascus in an opposing twist and combining these. The resulting pattern is immediately captivating.
The stacked handle combines walnut with 6000 year old ancient walrus jaw bone and Steller's sea cow bone. Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is an extinct, large sirenian mammal formerly found near the Asiatic coast of the Bering Sea. It was discovered in the Commander Islands in 1741 by the German naturalist Georg Steller, who was traveling with the explorer Vitus Bering. Through an unfortunate combination of being slow, large, and very good tasting, by 1768, less than 30 years after it had been discovered, Steller's sea cow was extinct. The contoured handle assures a firm, comfortable grip. An exceptional addition to any collection and perfect for use out in the field. The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched leather sheath.
