Description: This exceptional Scottish Dirk is the handiwork of bladesmith Fred Ott. The dirk occupies a unique niche in Highland culture and history. Many Highland Scots were too cash-poor to buy a sword, but virtually every male carried a dirk - and carried it everywhere! If in Japan the katana was the soul of the Samurai, in Scotland the dirk was the heart of the Highlander. The Dirk became symbolic of a Highland man's honor and oaths were sworn on the steel which was believed to be holy. The dirk was the personal sidearm of Highlanders and was carried by the officers, pipers, and drummers of Scottish Highland regiments. For those with a serious interest in the Highlands, a Scottish dirk is a must for any collection.
The 13-1/2 inch long damascus blade was hand forged from carbon steels for a long lasting edge. 1095 and 15N20 carbon steels are combined into a bold twist pattern. A distal taper ensures an optimal balance. A fuller travels along each side of the blade. The spine is hand fileworked.
The handle is formed from walnut wood that is meticulously hand carved to resemble Celtic knotwork. The guard and pommel are formed from antiqued brass.
The knife is accompanied by a basswood sheath wrapped in hand stitched goatskin. The frog and throat are formed from antiqued brass.
This tremendous knife would be an amazing addition to any collection.
