Description: Washington knifemaker, Andrea Lisch is both a bladesmith and a blacksmith. She has worked alongside her husband, Mastersmith David Lisch in both these roles for many years. Her skill in design and bladesmithing clearly shows through on this elegant paring knife.
The paring knife gets its name from its main function—removing or “paring” away things like peels or pits from fruits and vegetables. It’s ideal for peeling, coring, trimming, decorating, and other detail work. It's small size gives you complete control over the tip and edge of the blade. Generally, you'll use this knife in your hand rather than against a cutting board, though paring knives can also be used for chopping small foods, such as garlic cloves or ginger.
The bold, high contrast feather pattern is immediately captivating and draws attention from a distance. By forging closely to shape, she ensures optimal grain structure for a keen, long lasting edge. The blade is beautifully thin with a nice distal taper for clean, perfect cuts. The bolster is fully integral to the blade, with the damascus pattern moving seamlessly from bolster to blade. This technique has superior structural integrity and requires a particularly talented smith. The integral bolster is perfectly shaped to be comfortable in either a pinch grip or handle grip.
The handle is formed from presentation grade bocote (Cordia sp.) and is nicely sculpted for a secure, comfortable grip - swelling at the palm, moving into a slimmer waist, and swelling again at the end of the handle. The resilient wood will hold up beautifully to hard use, though this knife would also feel at home in most any collection. Thin nickel silver and black fiber spacers assist the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes in the kitchen.
Exceptional work throughout!
