Description: Mastersmith Kevin Harvey teaches bladesmithing courses, with students travelling from all over the world to learn his techniques. Kevin uses the Heavin Forge mark on his knives when he creates a knife while demonstrating for his classes. This is one such knife.
The 9 inch clip point blade was hand forged from 1070 carbon steel. It was forged closely to shape, ensuring a keen, long lasting edge. The blade was heat treated using a technique borrowed from Japanese swords. The spine was coated with clay prior to quenching. This results in a soft, supportive spine and keen, long lasting cutting edge. The gently undulating heat treatment line turns back so that the clip is fully hardened as well.
The handle is made from hairy vitex burl (Vitex obovata). This African wood has a warm brown tone and a tremendous grain pattern reminiscent of redwood burl and thuya burl. The contoured handle is fit perfectly to the bronze guard.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched cowhide sheath with ostrich shin leather inlay.
