Description: Dirk Loots is a South African-born knifemaker currently living in Cumming, Georgia. His knifemaking journey began in 2011 after taking a knifemaking course that taught him the possibilities of knives as an art form. By 2016, Dirk had become quite accomplished and entered the high-end “functional-art” market where he immediately garnered the attention and respect of some of the finest knife makers in the world. Dirk Loots' knives are becoming highly sought after as the creativity, precision, and execution of his work is absolutely exemplary. Outstanding material selection and flawless execution are hallmarks of a Dirk Loots Knife. Dirk’s work sets a high bar, and once in hand, you will respect each piece as a true masterpiece.
This dramatic folder shows his work and creativity at its best. It was inspired by a traditional Japanese tradesman's folder called a higonokami. Like the higonokami, the extended tang is used to open the blade, but it also acts as a lock to avoid the blade accidentally closing when in use.
The claw-shaped blade is formed from damascus. Many layers of carbon steel were forged together to create the dramatic, high performing blade. By Parkerizing the blade, Loots give it limited rust resistance. The sculpted blade is easily opened using the extended tang.
The handle combines copper bolsters with dyed and stabilized maple. The two join in an elegant arc. The copper bolsters are differentially textured and antiqued. Blue anodized titanium liners surround the rounded, raised backspacer.
Exceptional work throughout!
