Description: Mastersmith Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. Andrew received his MFA in Blacksmithing/Metalsmithing at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. A 2014 SNAG Early Career Artist Presenter, he is currently an instructor and resident artist at the Penland School of Arts and Crafts. Andrew won the Makers' Choice and Best of Show awards at the 2015 BladeGallery International Knife Show. A former Artist in Residence at The National Ornamental Metal Museum, he earned his Mastersmith certification from the American Bladesmithing Society in 2015. Andrew was the recipient of the B.R Hughes Award, given for the top piece submitted by a Mastersmith candidate. He is an artist that inspires many other knifemakers.
The dramatic damascus blade is a multi-bar composite forged to shape from 1084 and 15n20 carbon steels. The bold pattern is immediately captivating. The damascus shows both his skills at the grinder and at the forge. The steel clearly shows the influence of Mastersmith JD Smith, who is well known for his skills at creating damascus. A central bar of radialed W's damascus is surrounded by twist pattern damascus bars at the edge and spine. By forging the blade to shape, Andrew is able to ensure that the twist pattern spine and edge meet perfectly at the tip. The blade has incredible complexity that will have you staring at it for hours. The right side of the blade is stamped with Andrew's maker mark and the left side of the blade features his mastersmith mark.
The handle is constructed from carved Koa wood (Acacia koa) that meets flawlessly with a damascus S-guard and contoured ferrule. A hallmark of Meers' work, extremely detailed and lifelike ladybugs are inlaid into each side of the guard. These three dimensional ladybugs are made from copper, silver, shakudo (an alloy of copper and gold), and gold. The handle is meticulously carved to resemble the wrapped silk (tska ito) on the handle of a Japanese sword. The handle is finished with a radialed W's pattern damascus buttcap and damascus take down pin.
Exceptional work throughout!
