Not for those used to synthetics (10/10/2018)
I am chef/sushi chef with over 24 years experience and have been sharpening my own knives for this entire time. This stone is not going to be a fast metal eater like a synthetic stone of the same grit range. It is hard for a coarse stone and less forgiving of sloppy technique. I've owned mine for about 10 years now and I only recently have begun to appreciate it. It allows for smaller bur formation which in turn allows for a finer better edge off of your finishing stones. It takes more time to use but the payoff is worth it. I only rated 4 stars because of the learning curve. It is great stone for the price.

Don't bother (3/9/2011)
This stone is beautiful but cuts very slowly and has large inclusions of wildly differing grits. I bought both this and the #1000 and the #1000 both cuts faster and leaves a better finish than this one.
